Plays in landscape on phones. Your settings are saved on this device.

How Note Finder works

  1. Pick which strings and frets to practice, or keep the default: the open strings.
  2. A note name appears. Tap the place on the neck where you play it.
  3. When you finish, you see how many you got right, your typical answer time and a map of the slow spots.

It's a quick way to find notes on the guitar fretboard without counting frets from the nut. Knowing where each note sits also makes scales, chords and soloing easier to follow.

Where to start

Start with Open Strings: six notes, no frets. Then add one string at a time, beginning with the low E and A strings, and move to the full neck when those feel easy. Left-handed players can flip the board in the settings. To look a note up first, the guitar fretboard notes map shows every note on the neck.

What the results show

Besides right and wrong answers, the results map how long each part of the neck took you. A note you get right but slowly shows up too, so you know where to practice next. The results guide explains each number.

Questions

How is this different from Name That Note?

Note Finder gives you a note name and you find it on the neck. Name That Note does the opposite: it highlights a fret and you name the note.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. Turning the phone sideways gives you a bigger board. You can also install it as an app to open it in one tap and play offline.

Not sure what to practice?

Take the 24-question guitar note test. It shows which strings and frets you're slow on and suggests where to start.
